NOTES: Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the first session of the final at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast... It's classic David and Goliath encounter, Dave Harold, who won his only ranking title back in 1993 against the Goliath of the game, Ronnie O'Sullivan, World Champion and world number one... It's been a tournament full of thrills and spills so far, can we expect more drama as the afternoon unfolds...

Dave's first long pot attempt misses the mark and leaves an early chance for Ronnie... only 14 and Ronnie is forced to play safe... a miss from both players on awkward reds and everything is still safe... Harold breaks the deadlock and here's his first scoring chance in the match... he's taken the chance to split the pack off the blue, maintaining the positive approach he's adopted all week, so a good chance now to string a break together... black and pink are tied up so it will be hard work having to take lower colours... the break has reached 33 but Dave is still having to work off the blue... he's eventually lost position, but that 34 will give have helped settle him into the match... Harold's excellent safety earns him another chance... that red, with the rest, has gone astray, but no damage done. Harold has a useful 30 point lead with 4 reds left... a fabulous long red by Harold but no position... a good snooker has forced Ronnie to miss, so the lead goes to 35 with 51 on... and another miss by Ronnie, who's trying to clip the reds thin... he's left a free ball but Harold doesn't fancy anything there so the white goes back behind the green... and he's hit them this time... another good red by Harold and now he's 44 ahead with only 43 left on... Ronnie goes in off, Dave pots another red and it's first blood to the Stoke man...

A safety error by O'Sullivan gives Dave Harold first potting chance in frame two... only 5 there but Dave gets another chance immediately as Ronnie hasn't quite hit the mark with his safety yet... blue, pink and black are tied up this time, so not much of a chance at the moment... better now Harold's got the pink into play into one pocket... onto 25 now, and still working off the pink... and just as he gets the black into play, he misses the next red, the break ends at 39 and here's a good chance now for Ronnie... in no time at all Ronnie's moved on to 38 and now 68 which leaves him 24 up on the pink and that's enough to level the scores.

A poor break off by Ronnie leaves a long red for Harold... he's missed the blue on 17, but not left anything on... excellent safety from both players... the reds are all getting pushed to one side of the table... an error by Harold, going in-off, but only a red for Ronnie, no position that time... Harold is in trouble off the snooker Ronnie laid, two misses so far... and that's now given Ronnie a good scoring chance, 40 so far and 64-17 ahead... and down goes the red he needs for the frame... and he clears with 103

An early miss by Harold in frame four and this is a very good opening for Ronnie, nicely on the black, plenty of open reds... onto 45 now and he's working up a full head of steam now... the frame is safe as the break reaches 75, can he make another century... he's fluked one to keep the break going but missed the yellow, so 84 and a 3-1 lead at the interval.

The players return and the first chance goes to Ronnie... but a kick brings him to a halt at 33... Harold's made 39 but he's got a kick now, so a tough blue to keep the break going... and he's run out of position with 44 scored and back comes Ronnie again but it's not easy to get on the last red... but he's got it and the brown makes the frame safe..

Into frame six and an error by Harold lets O'Sullivan in, open reds, black in play, ominous signs... he's had to take the blue there, which will disappoint everyone, except Stephen Lee, who were hoping for a maximum... he's opened the pack but sent a red into the middle pocket so end of break at 47... no easy red for Dave and he's got Ronnie trouble now, behind the yellow... now the advantage swings to O'Sullivan as he's snookered Harold on all 6 remaining reds... and he's left a red on... and another frame slips away from Harold...

a very good safety exchange to start the last frame of the afternoon, Harold has the upper hand, with Ronnie snookered... fabulous pot by Harold and he lays another snooker... the points mount up for Harold, three misses in this frame already by Ronnie... and all that hard work gives Harold an opening... but despite some good pots he can't get any sort of position... another cracking log red by Harold but again he's not gained position... he's had to swerve to pot the black and now he's got some reds on, leading 28-0 at the moment... Dave moves 53 ahead, the break is now 33, and he'll need to split the reds, which are all in a bunch on the top cushion... and he doesn't split them and plays a poor safety too, but he leads by 60 with 7 reds left... Ronnie whistles on to 33 and now he's split the last two reds open... the only ball safe now is the brown which is tied up by the pink... just four points behind on the yellow, he could open the brown off the green... and he's on the brown, he will lead 6-1 going into tonight's session. Ronnie lets Dave in for the first chance of the evening... but he's left himself badly hampered and he can't pot that red... and O'Sullivan slots one to the centre... a rare bad positional shot the break ends at 38... a sequence of errors by both players, misses and now Ronnie's gone in-off... 33 so far for Harold and he's on the last red still... the break ends at 40, no position on the yellow... Harold has a 15 point lead on the yellow... there's a little pocket of rather noisy support for Dave Harold, maybe the locals have taken the Stoke man to their heart... he still needs green and brown, and the green is safe at the moment... but Ronnie has missed the thin edge of the green, although no damage done... a stunning shot on the green by Harold and he's on the brown, so will secure his second frame of the final...

An error by O'Sullivan gives Harold a chance to get amongst the balls in frame nine... he can't turn this into a scoring chance, the balls have gone very scrappy which may suit Harold more than O'Sullivan... Well it's one ball at a time in this frame and Harold leads 19-15 but Ronnie has created an opening now... Over in Germany Shaun Murphy has beaten Mark Selby in the Paul Hunter Classic Final... and now this run of 26 and counting has taken Ronnie 21 ahead on the last red.. and now he's 27 up on the yellow...

The first chance has gone to Harold again as frame ten gets under way... he needs to make something here because even a glimmer of a chance and O'Sullivan is winning the frame... b ut only 12 and he's missed a tough green to centre... but Ronnie spurns that chance as he's hit the red right off the table... 38 useful points before losing position but he's left a red on for O'Sullivan.. he's 20 points behind on the yellow... and Ronnie dishes up and is now one frame from victory.

Into the last frame before the interval, can Dave Harold take the match into the final session? Dave is in first again, onto 24 now with a good cut back black there to open a few reds up... and he's moved along to 57 and still nicely on the black... could Dave be eyeing up the high break, or even a maximum... Dave's best career break is 143, which he's made twice, he's onto 73 now so the frame is safe... sadly the black rattled on 81 but the match will resume after the interval.

Play is underway again, into frame twelve and O'Sullivan still stands one frame from the winning line... a cagey safety exchange so far... Harold makes a safety error and in very little time O'Sullivan has opened all the reds up and this could be the victory march... not quite, that missed pink ends the break at 50... one last chance for Harold... he's made 14 and run for cover... Ronnie leads by 41 with three reds left, he needs one red and a colour to clinch the match... Harold wins the safety battle... but that's a bad miss on the pink so Harold trails by 40 with 43 left on... Harold's chipped away to trail by 33 on the last red... and O'Sullivan clears up to win the first ranking event of the season and set the mark that everybody else will have to chase.
